It isn’t officially summer yet, and here we are talking about the 4th of July and Co-op advertising funds! But it will be here before you know it, and you also know that this is the biggest time for “blowout” sales for the summer. There are so many “summer-related” brands that offer co-op funding it is hard to know where to start. Think swimming pools, hot tubs, BBQs, outdoor furniture, and fireplace places. There also is all the outdoor sporting equipment to consider – think golfing, baseball, skateboards, roller skates, and bicycles. Let’s look at some 4th of July “trivia” to see if we can tie any of this into great campaigns for your current (or even new) advertisers.

4th of July Trivia

  1. 1777 was the first year that fireworks were used in an official Fourth of July celebration. The amount of money that Americans spend on fireworks has really shot up (pun intended…LOL!). According to the American Pyrotechnics Association, Americans spent $2.3 billion on fireworks in 2022. That dollar amount equates to 461.7 million pounds of fireworks!
  2. Fourth of July became a federal holiday in 1879.
  3. 150 million hot dogs are consumed each July 4th. 74 of those hot dogs were eaten in 10 minutes in 2018 at the Coney Island Hot Dog Eating Contest by Joey Chestnut!
  4. 61% of Americans will attend a July 4th picnic. 65% say fireworks shows are their favorite July 4th activity, followed by 32% of people saying food, and 28% saying that going to the beach is the best that day.
  5. It costs between $25,000 – $100,000 to host municipal fireworks shows, and $5 million is the minimum insurance coverage recommended for these shows. Massachusetts is the only state to ban all consumer fireworks.
  6. 28% of Americans will be purchasing some type of patriotic merchandise.
