Powersport brands are number “two” in the co-op world relative to usage, and you may wonder why. First you consider there are about a dozen brands that offer funding, and then you add that these are very expensive items. The more expensive the item, the more accrual money the retailer is “stacking up” that can be spent on their advertising. Then the more advertising they do, the more customers they get, the more they sell, and then guess what…they are ordering more product again!

Here are some facts about Powersports, which includes motorcycles, jet skis, etc., that you might be able to use to come up with an angle to include in your customer’s advertising campaign.

Powersports “Fun Facts”

  • The best time to order a new model year motorcycle is the end of the previous year, followed by the month of January. You want to order before Spring (March 21) to get cheaper deals (and deals on the previous model year that are still brand new in the showroom).
  • What is the average life of a motorcycle? Well, that depends on the “category” of motorcycle being purchased. A used touring motorcycle will usually last 100,000 miles while a used sport bike will usually last for 50,000 miles. Just like a car there is maintenance involved. If a bike has never been maintained it can be worn out within 25,000 miles, while investing in some maintenance can make that bike last 100,000 miles.
  • In 2024 the world’s best-selling motorcycle brand was Honda. In the top 10 there are 3 Japanese manufacturers, 3 Indian, and 4 Chinese.
  • The most sought-after motorcycle in 2023/2024 is the Honda SuperCub. With over 100 million units sold since its 1958 debut it is the best-selling motorcycle ever made.
  • The Harley Davidson CVO Limited is nearly impossible to steal! At 411kg and 2600mm in length it is extremely heavy and large. The Triumph Tiger Explorer, Indiana Roadmaster, Triumph Rocket III and Honda Goldwing round out the top 5.
  • Harley Davidson makes more motorcycles for police departments than any other brand.
  • According to the National Marine Manufacturers Association, the personal watercraft segment (jet skis), sold about 85-90,000 new units in 2023 which was up between 20 – 25% of 2022 sales.
