We are a few days away from the start of the Fall season, and your businesses can use co-op funds to promote all their Fall “clean up” brands. Raking leaves, mulching, cleaning garden beds and clearing debris all need to be done. Other tasks such as cleaning out your gutters, pruning trees and shrubs and aerating the lawn add more to your workload, but they help to ensure a healthy lawn and garden when Spring rolls back around. Listed below are a few more “must-dos” before those snowflakes hit the ground!

Additional Fall Clean-Up Tips

  • Trim rogue branches. Trim up the dead, damaged or diseased branches that you didn’t get to in the summer. You don’t need any branches breaking and falling during a snowfall, causing any house trouble (like broken windows, etc.)
  • Dry everything out. Drain all the water from hoses, fountains, drip irrigation systems, and other water features and store them in a dry place. Any water left standing may damage the equipment once it freezes.
  • Feed the lawn. Add a fall lawn fertilizer with high phosphorus content to encourage root growth so that you have a lush, green lawn come spring.
  • Plant bulbs, shrubs, and Fall annuals. Some plants do best when planted in the Fall. If you want to add new shrubs or Spring bulbs like hyacinth, now is the time to get them in the ground.
  • Protect the deck. Prevent mold and mildew growth by giving the deck a good pressure wash. Once that is dry, add a weatherproofing stain to keep the wood protected from moisture damage from snow.
