A co-op “category” that the Co-Op Connect Team gets asked about frequently is pet food and pet supplies. Although we have very limited pet-related brands listed on the platform, do not think that this is not a great fit for co-op funding. This is a case where 99.9% of co-op funding comes from the distributors! The distributors buy huge volumes of food, treats, and toys from the various brands that create them, and then they sell products to all local pet stores, and they are the ones providing the co-op funds to the stores.

Even your big “chain” stores like PetSmart buy from distributors. In the case of Pet Supplies Plus, they buy from various food/toy manufacturers and then store them at their distribution centers. For instance, they have one in South Carolina that serves all the Pet Supplies Plus stores across all the Southeast states. So, their distribution center is earning all the co-op funds and can pass them on to local stores that they service. So, as you will see from some of the facts below, pets are a “HUGE” business, and for any pet-related businesses that you work with, always ask where they buy their product from – that is the key!

Pet “Facts”

  1. An estimated 89.7 million dogs are owned in the U.S.
  2. 46.5 million households own cats – making them the second most popular pet after dogs.
  3. In the U.S., approximately 11.1 million households own freshwater fish, making them the third most popular pet after dogs and cats.
  4. In 4th place in the pet world are birds. Approximately 6.1 million U.S. households own birds as pets, according to the American Pet Products Association.
  5. In 2024, Americans were estimated to spend $39.1 billion on veterinary care and products, a 2.9% increase from the $38.3 billion spent in 2023.
  6. The numbers are not yet compiled for 2024, but in 2023, Americans spent $64.4 billion on pet food and treats. In 2022, that number is $58.1 billion, so you can see how this is growing!
