If you work with any auto dealers, tire stores, or auto repair shops – now is the time for them to use their co-op funds to promote winter safety. With the start of winter only two days away, you want to be sure your car is safe and in great repair so that you can make it through these next 3 months of winter. It is no fun to get stuck on the road with a flat tire or engine problem any time throughout the year but it sure is a lot worse if it is pounding down snow and 5 degrees!

Here are some auto repair tips that may help you develop an angle to include in your customer’s advertising campaign.

Winter Car Tips/Checklist

  • Install winter tires. It is possible to use all-season tires however you may not get the maximum performance in really bad weather, when the temperature hovers around or below freezing, the rubber compounds in non-winter tires harden which decreases the tire’s ability to grip the road.
  • Have your car serviced to prepare for winter challenges. For instance, battery power decreases as the temperature drops, so it takes more power to start your car. If your battery already has problems, your risk of breaking down increases.
  • Get your brakes checked as well. Cold weather does not necessarily hurt your brakes, but you want to ensure the best performance for those ice patches and deeper snow.
  • Belts, hoses, spark plugs, wires, and cables should all be checked. These can go bad any time of the year, but if they go bad in the winter, you could be stranded in the cold for a very long time.
  • Keep washer fluid full and install winter wipers. Winter wipers come equipped with rubber that keeps ice from collecting on the blades. Be sure to remove the wipers in the spring, as these are much heavier blades, and they increase the load on the wiper motor.
  • Keep your gas tank at least half full. This is way more important in the winter than summer as a full tank reduces condensation. Condensation can cause your gas line to freeze u,p and no one needs that headache. Plus, if you get stranded, having that full tank of gas will let you keep that engine running to stay warm until help arrives.
