It’s that time of year to help your boat dealers and marina customers utilize their co-op dollars! Memorial Day 2025 has come and gone; now it’s time for smooth sailing for all boat owners. I know that many parts of the country (like Florida, California, the Carolinas, etc.) may be able to use their boats all year long, but it is a huge deal and celebrated “big time” in the Midwest and Northern States. In these “seasonal” states, it will be “all hands on deck” when it comes to boating from now until Fall. I certainly don’t mean that in any emergency way, but rather you will see more people on boats than what should be on them – folks are just that excited to hit the water. For a great example of what I am talking about, Google “Jobbie Nooner”. It is a VERY large boat party that takes place around Gull Island in Lake Saint Clair, Michigan. 60,000 – 100,000+ people attend this event every year, and it’s kind of like Mardi Gras on water. I know if this type of event is happening in Michigan, then there are others just as large in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ohio, Illinois, and all the “normal” cold-weather states.

Boating/Marina “Facts”

  1. There are approximately 11.55 million registered recreational vessels in the U.S.; 95% of those vessels are less than 26 feet in length.
  2. An estimated 100 million Americans go boating each year.
  3. Many boat owners have an annual household income of $100,000 or less (may give you some ideas on tying together boat advertising with other non-boating brands).
  4. The National Marine Manufacturers Association estimates that approximately 1.1 million personal watercraft, including jet skis, are in use in the U.S.
  5. Florida has the most marinas in the U.S., with 1,242. This represents 12.6% of the nation’s total. California, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin round out the top 5 states with the most marinas.
  6. The average 24-foot boat will run between $60,000 and $150,000, depending on whether you purchase a single or twin engine.
  7. A 40-foot boat (considered a mid-size yacht) will run anywhere from $200,000 to over $1 million. This depends on whether it is new or used, a sailboat or motor yacht, the type of luxurious features, the condition of the boat (if used), and if it is a well-known brand.
