June through November is hurricane season, and if you have advertisers selling the “right” products, they certainly can use their co-op money to promote these products. Although September is normally the worst hurricane month due to the warm temperatures of the water at that time, Hurricane Beryl in July certainly caused havoc in the Caribbean and the Cayman Islands along with Jamaica. If that wasn’t bad enough, it then hit with horrific storm surges in Mexico and Texas. The heavy rains extended through the Midwest and East Coast causing so much flooding and power outages.

Since we have yet to hit the “heavy” hurricane month folks are looking to get ahold of any/all products that can help them ride out future storms, especially if they were badly affected by Beryl. If you have customers that have hardware stores, HVAC companies, Tractor and Farm supply and lumberyards this is the time to help them promote items that can help folks “weather the storm” and utilize their co-op funds while doing so.

Hurricane Season “Preparedness Tips”

  1. Get an insurance “checkup” and document your possessions. It is important to check what type of insurance you have on your home/apartment and what it covers. Many homeowner policies do not provide coverage for damage due to hurricanes or flooding; you need to purchase an additional rider for that, and this would not be the time to find out that you have zero coverage.
  2. You also want to be sure you have food, water, batteries, charger, radio and some cash. If you can afford a “Whole House” Generator that certainly makes it easier to ride out the storm. These run anywhere from $3,750 to $22,000, depending on the size of your home. Portable Generators are much more affordable – running anywhere from $200-$300 up to $3,500. You need to ensure you have enough gas to keep the generator running, and you cannot “power up” the entire house, but it will allow you to keep things in your refrigerator/freezer from melting and allow you to charge your phone for emergencies, etc.
  3. You want to also take care of the outside of the house, so it doesn’t end up inside the house! Keep your trees trimmed and if possible, install storm shutters. If that is not possible it is a good time to go to the lumber store to purchase plywood, steel or aluminum panels to have on hand in case you need to board up the windows. The garage door is the most vulnerable part of the home so, if possible, you should upgrade your garage door with cost-effective retrofit (new springs, photo eye safety systems, new garage door opener, etc.).
